Venom Creator Thinks Tom Hardy Is Going To Do A Great Job

When Sony and Marvel brokered a deal to allow Spider-Man to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the floodgates opened.

On one side of the fence, Marvel Studios quickly locked down Tom Holland for a standalone trilogy revolving around the Web-Head, and that’s a contract that includes a handful of appearances in the MCU’s big-name crossovers (see: Civil War and next year’s Avengers: Infinity War). For Sony, the Powers That Be made the headlines through the casting of Tom Hardy, star of Mad Max and Peaky Blinders, as Eddie Brock, one of the unfortunate (fortunate?) sods who winds up wrangling the Venom symbiote under control.

Toss in a director in Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) along with the possibility of an R-rating and it’s small wonder why Venom has generated so much attention across the industry. As we reported last week, Fifty Shades scribe Kelly Marcel has climbed on board to iron out a script, which ought to ensure Sony and Fleischer’s spinoff is bang on course for that October 2018 release date. And so, with the project beginning to coalesce, creator Todd McFarlane has offered his verdict on Sony’s plans, along with that R-rating.

Venom Creator Thinks Tom Hardy Is Going To Do A Great Job

Chatting to ScreenGeek at NYCC, here’s what Todd McFarlane had to say:

It’ll be interesting. I’ve seen some movies of his where he can bring anger and a wide personality to it. To me, I think Tom Hardy’s going to be as good as whatever Venom looks like. We all know Tom’s going to act. He’s going to do a good job. So now what’s Venom gonna’ look like? It’s an R-rated movie, how ‘R’ are they going to go? To me, that’s the question. Are they going to go a ‘little bit R’? Venom’s a monster to me, and to me – are they going to make him a monster or are they going to make him a man? Are they going to humanize him? That’s what we gotta’ find out.

Directed by Ruben Fleischer, Venom is expected to launch Sony’s own Marvel universe on October 5th, 2018. Other projects in the mix include Silver & Black, which is coming by way of Gina Prince-Bythewood, not to mention spinoff movies featuring Kraven and Mysterio.

Spider-Man: Homecoming Star Hints That Venom Could Show Up In The Sequel

The sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming has one of the strongest rogues galleries in comic books to turn to when finding a new supervillain worthy of matching up to the friendly neighbourhood hero.

While the obvious suggestions, judging by the film’s post-credits scene, are Scorpion and the Sinister Six, Jacob Batalon – who plays Peter Parker’s best bud Ned – has a different idea. He wants to see Homecoming 2 break down the walls between universes and pit Spidey against Tom Hardy’s Venom, who’s set to appear in Sony’s solo movie.

The actor briefly chatted about his hopes in an interview with Screen Rant, saying the following:

Screen Rant: In your fantasy world what villain would you like to see next for the next Spider-Man film?

Jacob Batalon: It would be interesting to see like Venom, but that’s just me though.

Screen Rant: Alright well hopefully we can because we now know its kind of–

Jacob Batalon: We’ll see what happens. I’m not gonna say nothing else.

Spider-Man: Homecoming Star Hints That Venom Could Show Up In The Sequel

Batalon’s initial comment doesn’t need too much analysis. Like the majority of Spider-Man fans out there, it just seems that he’d love to see Venom actually interact with his nemesis in the movies. His second reply, however, is a lot more eyebrow-raising. The way that he’s keen to shut down the discussion suggests he might just have some info on the possibility of Tom Hardy’s symbiotic villain turning up in the MCU.

That being said, fans probably shouldn’t get too excited about this just yet. We’ve heard so many conflicting reports on whether the upcoming solo movie is connected to the work of Marvel Studios that we’ve already got whiplash (the neck injury, not Mickey Rourke). Memorably, Sony’s Amy Pascal initially suggested that Venom was part of the MCU, before Marvel’s Kevin Feige clarified that wasn’t the case.

Later, Spidey himself, Tom Holland seemed to close the book on a potential crossover for good by saying it was “never going to happen.” Still, fans – and Jacob Batalon – live in hope that this is all just a smokescreen to hide something awesome that the two studios have up their sleeves. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if that really is the case.

Venom is set to arrive in theaters October 5th, 2018. Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, meanwhile, lands on July 5th, 2019.

Venom Will Reportedly Adapt This Comic Book Storyline

With Sony’s Venom solo movie gearing up to start filming at the end of this month, more news is leaking out about the project that will serve to launch a Spider-Man spinoff universe. Alongside Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, we’ve recently learned that the likes of Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed and Jenny Slate will also have roles. And, if this new report is to be believed, we might just know what the movie’s plot will be.

According to Omega Underground, Venom will based off 1993’s six-issue comic book series Lethal Protector. The site’s evidence for this includes the fact they’ve uncovered that the production will move to San Francisco for a period of time, which is where the aforementioned storyline is set. Furthermore, OU reports that the film is recruiting actors to play a mercenary task force, which sounds like The Jury, a team of mercs that are after Venom in the comic

Lethal Protector was also the character’s first ever solo series, which would make it the natural pick for his first solo movie, too. Most notably, it saw Eddie Brock attempt to redeem himself for his past crimes, even burying the hatchet with Spider-Man and moving from New York to San Francisco. However, the father of one of his victims hires The Jury to kill him. The story also introduces five new symbiote villains for Venom to fight: Scream, Phage, Riot, Lasher and Agony.

Venom Will Reportedly Adapt This Comic Book Storyline

With the exception of Spider-Man and a few other details (The Jury are decked out in Stark weaponry in the comics, for instance), Lethal Protector does seem to offer everything Sony would want from Venom. It would introduce him as an anti-hero rather than a villain and would immediately set up a shed-load of symbiotes. After all, without Peter Parker on board, the film will have to build a mythology around Venom to fuel several future movies.

This isn’t the first time that we’ve heard Sony will be looking to introduce more symbiotes into the pic, either. Riz Ahmed was previously reported to be playing Brock’s nemesis/kind of son Carnage. Likewise, Michelle Williams could be portraying Eddie’s ex-wife Ann Weying, who becomes She-Venom.

If all this is true, fans can expect Venom to be a very busy movie when it swings into cinemas on October 5th, 2018.

First Photo From Spider-Man Spinoff Venom Hits The Web

Now, it would seem as if production is officially underway, as the film’s Twitter account has posted the first photo – which came accompanied with the caption “Day 1.” Check it out in the gallery below along with some awesome fan-art.

As you can see, this is hardly the most exciting pic, as it’s simply a behind the scenes shot featuring Tom Hardy and two unknown individuals, likely making plans for the upcoming spinoff. Still, it signals that the gears have begun to turn and presumably, we can expect to see more from the production over the coming weeks. Hopefully that includes a look at Hardy in costume, as that’s what everyone’s really eager for.

That being said, it’s hard to ignore the fact that Spider-Man won’t be involved here. Given that this is a Sony Pictures production, and not one that hails from Marvel, Peter Parker won’t factor into things and Venom is going to stand separate from the MCU, instead taking place in Sony’s own Marvel universe. It’s an odd decision, to be sure, and one that has most people feeling a bit apprehensive about the project.

Still, there’s no denying that Tom Hardy is a hugely exciting choice to play the character and given that he’s a tremendously talented individual, we’re able to remain cautiously optimistic that the spinoff will find success, even despite being removed from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Sony Pictures has a long way to go if it’s to ever compete with Marvel, of course – thanks to Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s blistering success, the MCU is now at $12 billion and counting – but the studio’s own Spidey universe is all set to kick off with the launch of Venom on October 5th, 2018. Other projects in the mix include Silver & Black, along with spinoff movies featuring Kraven and Mysterio.

Tom Hardy’s Venom Will Be Created With Motion-Capture CGI

First-time director and all-around performance capture expert Andy Serkis (The Last Jedi) has let slip that Sony will be using CGI to render Tom Hardy’s Venom.

Yahoo Movies caught up with Serkis to discuss Breathe, his directorial debut in which Andrew Garfield wrangles with polio. However, it didn’t take long before the conversation veered toward The Imaginarium, Andy Serkis’ London-based studio that specializes in next-generation storytelling, which is to say that it’s all for motion-capture performances.

Currently in pre-production on his own version of The Jungle Book, which was quietly pushed to avoid a clash with Disney’s recent live-action redo, Andy Serkis waxed lyrical about the future of performance capture, and why he believes the process deserves more mainstream recognition. From Mark Rylance (The BFG) to Karin Konoval in War For the Planet of the Apes, a whole host of big-name stars have embraced the art form…including Tom Hardy.

Tom Hardy's Venom Will Be Created With Motion-Capture CGI

Much like how Marvel Studios renders Hulk in Avengers and the soon-to-be-released Thor: Ragnarok, Sony will be calling upon bleeding-edge tech to produce Tom Hardy’s anti-hero. And yes, in case you’re wondering, Topher Grace’s performance in Spider-Man 3 was largely created using CGI as well.

Per Yahoo Movies:

The time has come that people understand that performance capture is a technology, not a genre of acting. Acting is acting, and the more actors – like Steve Zahn… and Karin Konoval who plays Maurice in ‘War For The Planet of the Apes’ – the more A-list actors that come on board, like Mark Rylance playing The BFG, or a lot of actors in the new Marvel films… Tom Hardy is playing a new character using performance capture. It all points up ‘what is the nature of acting?’ and there is no difference between acting wearing a costume and makeup, or wearing a motion capture suit. That’s plain and simple, it just needs awarding bodies to understand that.

Directed by Ruben Fleischer, filming on Sony’s Venom spinoff is now underway ahead of its planned release in 2018, when Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, and Jenny Slate will co-star.

Sony’s Venom Spinoff May Include Flashback Scenes Set In Asia

Following a last-minute delay to production, filming on Sony’s star-studded Venom movie is now underway in Atlanta, where the 2018 spinoff joins other high-profile tentpoles in the vein of Avengers 4 and Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Ruben Fleischer is calling the shots from behind the lens, but beyond the film’s core cast – Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed and Jenny Slate are all expected to star – there’s still much we don’t know about the Sony-backed project.

Situated outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we understand Venom has been angled as the opening chapter to Sony’s Spider-Man universe, while Lethal Protector, the six-issue comic book series that first hit store shelves in 1993, has been earmarked as a potential inspiration. Now, Omega Underground has unearthed another casting call that suggests a small portion of Venom will take place in Asia.

Sony's Venom Spinoff May Include Flashback Scenes Set In Asia

Word is Ruben Fleischer and Co. have cast the net in search of “villagers without modern haircuts,” though it’s unclear if these scenes will be set in the present day. Assuming Venom will feature flashbacks, there’s a chance Fleischer’s standalone pic will whisk viewers back through history in order to show the origin story behind the titular alien symbiote. Perhaps it’s a government conspiracy gone awry? Or something much more sinister?

Whatever the outcome, Omega Underground later noted that said flashback could involve one of the homeless people that Eddie Brock (Hardy) is protecting, as Venom recently issued a call for extras to play “San Francisco homeless” for a couple of night shoots. Granted, it’s unclear if the two casting calls are connected.

Per Twitter:

Directing from a script penned by Kelly Marcel (50 Shades of Grey), Fleischer’s Venom movie is expected to launch into theaters on October 5th, 2018, and when it does, it’ll use motion-capture CGI to render the titular alien symbiote. So similar to how Topher Grace’s performance was captured in Spider-Man 3, then.

Venom Set Pics Reveal Possible First Look At Tom Hardy As Eddie Brock

Spider-Man fans are waiting with intense curiosity to see how Sony’s upcoming Venom movie plays out. While some aren’t fond of the idea of the symbiotic supervillain being split from his web-headed nemesis, the casting of Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock has gone a long way to igniting interest in the project.

So far, the production has been kept mostly under wraps. A couple of new shots taken from the movie’s set, however, could just give us our first glimpse at Hardy in character as the titular anti-hero. The Daily Mail shared the two images – seen in the gallery below – which see the actor on set during location shooting on the streets of Atlanta.

Admittedly, they aren’t the most fascinating of photos, as they simply see Hardy in everyday casual wear, which the site describes as “an all-black ensemble, including a waterproof jacket, buttoned up against the chilly evening” and “a New York Yankees baseball cap low over his head and a pair of headphones around his neck.” However, if these depict the Brit in costume rather than his own clothes, then it technically counts as our very first look at the movie’s version of Eddie Brock.

If nothing else, these pics confirm that, just as we always suspected, Hardy’s Eddie Brock will be totally different from Topher Grace’s Venom seen in 2007’s Spider-Man 3. Though the actor doesn’t seem to have bulked up to the insane degree he did for his last turn as a comic book villain, Bane in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, Brock still looks like an intimidating guy – even before combining with the symbiote.

Venom finally began filming in late October, after several delays, and now that the first set photos from the production have trickled online, we can expect many more to appear in the coming weeks ahead of its theatrical release on October 5th, 2018. As always, watch this space for more.

First Official Look At Tom Hardy As Eddie Brock In Venom

So far, the production has been kept mostly under wraps, but as filming continues down in Atlanta, we’re beginning to see more and more of the pic. Just a few days ago, for instance, we got some blurry set photos of Hardy which, admittedly, didn’t give us a whole lot to go on. Now, however, we have something more official, as the Twitter account for the spinoff has Tweeted out an image of the actor in between takes, which means he’s sporting his look for Eddie Brock.

It’s not much different than how he usually appears, mind you, but you’ll see that Hardy’s got jet black hair here along with bandages and tattoos all over his arms. We can’t infer much from this, but it’s still nice to see an official production still rather than blurry set snaps. Speaking of which, we do have a few more of those as well, and though the context of the scenes being shot in them is unknown, they do give us yet another glimpse at the Mad Max star in character.

Behind the lens, Ruben Fleischer is calling the shots on Venom but beyond the film’s core cast – Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed and Jenny Slate are all expected to co-star – there’s still much we don’t know about the project.

J.K. Simmons Not Opposed To Reprising J. Jonah Jameson Role For Sony’s Spider-Man Universe

From Joss Whedon to J.K. Simmons, over the years a great number of creators have traded Marvel for DC (and vice versa, of course), with Brian Michael Bendis being the latest to trade one comic book giant for another.

Whedon, on the other hand, walked away from Marvel Studios after delivering two Avengers movies in only three years, while J.K. Simmons was cast as Commissioner Jim Gordon just as Justice League was beginning to coalesce. It’s by no means the first time that the Oscar-winning Simmons has dipped his toe in Hollywood’s crowded superhero genre, though – long before the formation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the actor played the part of J. Jonah Jameson for Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movies.

With his notorious temper and brilliant comic timing, J.J. Jameson was undoubtedly one of the greatest components of the Raimi trilogy, and it seems Simmons is not opposed to reprising that iconic role should the opportunity arise.

J.K. Simmons Not Opposed To Reprising J. Jonah Jameson Role For Sony's Spider-Man Universe

As Sony’s Spider-Man universe begins to fall into place – Venom, for instance, is now filming in anticipation of a 2018 release – Entertainment Tonight quizzed J.K. Simmons about the possibility of circling back to the Daily Bugle and reprising as the fast-talking Jameson.

I never say never. I mean, you know, obviously I had an amazing time with Sam Raimi on those movies, and Tobey [Maguire] and everybody. That was a great great time, and huge for my career and my life, and just pure fun. If there were an opportunity to revisit that…. I don’t know, though… how old is Spider-Man going to be if J. Jonah Jameson is this old?

It’s a second coming that comic book fans have been crying out for, but at least based on the current climate, it’s difficult to imagine a scenario in which J.K. Simmons returns to the Spider-Man camp at some point in the future. Heck, the only reason Marc Webb didn’t feature J. Jonah Jameson in his Amazing Spider-Man series was to honor Simmons’ beloved performances, so perhaps it’s best if this long-requested return remains in the realm of wishful thinking.

Leaked Venom Set Video Offers Fleeting Glimpse Of Tom Hardy In Action

Soon after Sony sounded the klaxon in order to announce the start of Venom‘s production, it didn’t take long before eagle-eyed photographers and passers-by relayed the first photos of Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock.

And today, Radar Online has delivered the next best thing: an admittedly blurry set video that shows Hardy in action as the famed anti-hero. Embedded below, you’ll see the Mad Max star jogging down an alleyway, as white smoke billows out from nearby chimneys – for the record, Hardy’s attire matches up with the costumed spotted over the weekend, so this video was likely captured on the same day.

And so, as Eddie Brock nears the end of the alleyway, he comes into contact with an offscreen adversary. It’s difficult to tell from this overhead shot, but it appears Brock has an altercation with a human foe (a homeless person, perhaps?) before running off into the distance. There’s also a good chance that this scene takes place soon after the first encounter with the titular alien symbiote, but we’ll leave that one for you to decide.

Story-wise, there’s not an awful lot to go on at this early stage. Online reports claim Venom will feature a flashback to Feudal Japan – the film’s latest call for extras did cast the net in search of “villagers without modern haircuts,” so take from that what you will – while there’s also evidence to suggest that Riz Ahmed has been cast as Carnage, the pic’s primary antagonist.

Expect Sony and Ruben Fleischer to unleash the symbiotic supervillain on October 5th, 2018. That’s still an awful long way away, so keep your peepers peeled for more Venom updates in the coming weeks and months. In related news, we learned earlier today that J.K. Simmons is not opposed to reprising his role as the cigar-chomping, hilariously volatile J. Jonah Jameson for Sony’s Spider-Man universe.

New Venom Shot Takes Us Into Eddie Brock’s Home

With Spider-Man now rubbing shoulders with the Avengers over in the MCU, Sony is moving forward with its own shared universe headed up by other anti-heroes and villains from the Spider-verse. With projects such as Silver & Black and Morbius the Living Vampire on the way, first out the door is Venom, starring Tom Hardy as the symbiote’s host Eddie Brock.

So far, we haven’t seen much of the movie, save a few set photos and videos which gave us a glimpse at Hardy in character as Brock. As it’s still early days on the production – filming only began on October 23rd – the movie’s official Twitter account is just teasing us with oblique behind the scenes shots every now and then. They’re not much, but the latest is a selfie from Hardy himself, captioned “Home.” From that, we can gather that this was taken on the set of Brock’s abode in the film.

Previous shots that the account’s given us include a blurry pic of Hardy that marked the beginning of production and another of the former Dark Knight Rises star taking a break from filming. These aren’t the most thrilling images, then, but every little glimpse helps us gather an impression of what Venom is going to be like.

Of course, what fans are really counting on is the big reveal of Hardy as the titular symbiotic anti-hero. Previously, we learned that the Venom suit would be created with motion capture CGI, which suggests that we could be waiting a while to see the final effect. In fact, it probably won’t be unveiled until the first teaser trailer lands. However, an early rendering or concept art might be shared at some point, if we’re lucky.

Directed by Zombieland‘s Ruben Fleischer, Venom also stars Michelle Williams (reportedly playing Brock’s former wife Ann Weying/She-Venom), Riz Ahmed (potentially portraying Carnage) and Jenny Slate (said to be cast as a scientist). It’s set to shoot into cinemas on October 15th, 2018.

Tom Hardy’s MMA Trainer Believes The World Is Not Ready For Venom

Tom Hardy isn’t one to do things by halves.

From Bronson to Fury Road to The Dark Knight Rises, the British thesp is known and loved for his raw, downright mesmerizing performances. And it looks like Venom is about to up the ante.

Pegged to arrive in 2018, the Ruben Fleischer-directed spinoff has officially entered production in Atlanta, after leaked set photos brought us closer to Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock and his humble abode. Filming will likely continue into the new year, but we’re now learning that part of Hardy’s intense fitness regime involves a bout of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) training, which ought to please those hoping for a more physical, hardboiled movie than Marvel’s Spider-Man films.

In fact, while discussing Tom Hardy’s fitness plan in a new documentary, trainers Nathan Jones and Mark Mene heaped praise on the British actor, before warning that the world is not ready for Venom.

Jones even went so far as to say that Venom serves up “one of the darkest, most powerful supervillains” yet, which will surely leave comic book diehards (and Tom Hardy fans!) counting down the days until October 5th.

Here’s that brief, tantalizing quote in full, which ends with a very fitting word: carnage.

What the world is going to see is one of the darkest, most powerful supervillains that Marvel has ever created. It’s going to be carnage.

Currently lensing across parts of Atlanta ahead of its release in 2018, Venom features a cast comprised of Michelle Williams (Ann Weying/She-Venom), Riz Ahmed (Carnage?) and Jenny Slate as an unknown scientist. October 5th, 2018 is the date for your diaries, while Sony is also said to be making headway on a live-action adaptation of Morbius, the Living Vampire.

Filming will likely continue into the new year, and though it’ll be a while yet before we get any kind of official look at the actor in character, those set pics continue to arrive at a steady rate.

Speaking of which, another one has popped up today and it would seem to show off Hardy’s costume. Seen in the gallery down below, it’s hardly the best shot and the lighting makes it tough to tell what exactly he’s wearing, but the dark outfit with the strap and what appears to be bandages does resemble that tactical Agent Venom look we’ve seen in the comics.

Then again, we could be completely wrong. After all, we’ve heard that the character will be brought to life using CGI and there’s no evidence of any kind of motion capture going on in this pic. As such, we can’t say with certainty that Hardy’s in his Venom costume here. Especially because story-wise, there’s not an awful lot to go on at this early stage.

That aside though, we still know very little about the project.

What we can tell you with absolute certainty, however, is that Sony and Ruben Fleischer will unleash the symbiotic supervillain on October 5th, 2018. That’s still an awful long way away, but be sure keep your peepers peeled on WGTC for more Venom updates in the coming weeks and months.

Venom: Tom Hardy Teases Eddie Brock’s Apartment

If one thing is to be said about Spider-Man, it’s that not only does he have one of the richest rogues galleries Marvel has to offer, but in all of comics as well. Of course, there are those whom True Believers tend to favor over others, but none of us can deny the cult following that Venom has amassed over the years.

Bonded to an alien symbiote that helps in giving him such a badass look, this character has sometimes found himself portrayed as an anti-hero, a practice not uncommon whenever someone normally thought of as being “a bad guy” is the protagonist in a given narrative. Thus, we expect that to hold true with the feature film.

To date, Eddie Brock has appeared in only one previous movie, that being the 2007 mess that was Spider-Man 3. And even though he was shoehorned by the studio into Sam Raimi’s final contribution to the franchise and not portrayed to the liking of many of us, you have to admit that he looked pretty fierce while in his villainous guise. Then again, aesthetics don’t solely make up a good movie.

Perhaps in an effort to distinguish Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock from Topher Grace’s – aside from Hardy being an absolute beast – we’ve seen hints of the former Bane sporting something that looks similar to the Agent Venom costume. Granted, this is a look normally associated with the Flash Thompson version of Venom, but adaptations are all about picking and choosing what works for your story.

But regardless of whether that pans out, the fact of the matter is that Brock needs somewhere to hang his hat at night. As such, the official Facebook page for the spinoff flick has offered a 360-degree view of his apartment (check it out here). Admittedly, we don’t know how much time will be spent there in the final cut, but we can ponder if those headphones are blasting any tunes from the black metal pioneers that share a name with the character.

Venom opens in theaters on October 5, 2018.

New Venom Poster Reveals The Film’s Logo And Eddie Brock’s Costume

Filming will likely continue into the new year, and though it’ll be a while yet before we get any kind of official look at the actor in character, we do have the next best thing today.

Straight from CCXP (Comic Con Experience) in Brazil, Collider has brought us some shots of what appears to be the first poster for Venom (seen in the gallery below, along with some recent fan art). While it’s not particularly revealing, there is one interesting thing to note about it, and that’s the look of the titular character. Though we’d had hints that Hardy would be donning the Agent Venom outfit for the film, it seems that’s not the case and instead, Sony will be using the iconic symbiote suit.

Again, it’s not much, but with this poster now out in the wild, it’s clear that the studio is at least starting to plan the spinoff’s marketing campaign, which means much more should arrive soon. Until then, we can tell you that behind the lens, Ruben Fleischer is calling the shots on Venom but beyond the film’s core cast – Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed and Jenny Slate are all expected to co-star – there’s still much we don’t know about the project.

Tom Hardy Reveals First Venom Plot Details

Spider-Man fans are waiting with intense curiosity to see how Sony’s upcoming Venom movie plays out. While some aren’t fond of the idea of the symbiotic supervillain being split from his web-headed nemesis, the casting of Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock has gone a long way to igniting interest in the project.

So far, the production has been kept mostly under wraps, but as filming continues down in Atlanta, we’re beginning to see more and more of the pic. Just a few days ago, for instance, we got a look at the first poster and now, thanks to Sony’s presentation during Comic Con Experience 2017 in Sao Paulo Brazil, some confirmation on which comic book storyline the movie will adapt has arrived.

Speaking to fans in a message recorded from the set, Hardy promised that he’d be bringing tons of action and dark humor to the role, while also stating that Venom is hugely important to the Marvel Universe and, last but not least, it’ll be inspired by the Lethal Predator miniseries – as was previously rumored.

For those who may not know, Lethal Protector was the character’s first ever solo series, which would make it the natural pick for his first solo movie, too.

After all, without Peter Parker on board, the film will have to build a mythology around the titular character to fuel several future movies.

Directing from a script penned by Kelly Marcel (Fifty Shades of Grey), Rueben Fleischer’s Venom is expected to launch into theaters on October 5th, 2018, and when it does, it’ll use motion-capture CGI to render the titular alien symbiote. So similar to how Topher Grace’s performance was captured in Spider-Man 3, then.

Venom Director Reveals More Plot Details For Upcoming Spinoff

As production continues on Sony’s Venom, more plot details are leaking out about the symbiote’s first solo outing. Star Tom Hardy recently confirmed that the movie is based off the 1993 Lethal Protector comic book storyline, as has been rumoured for some time, and now, a second inspiration has been revealed via the film’s director, Ruben Fleischer.

Speaking at the Comic-Con Experience 2017 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Fleischer announced that Venom would not only draw elements from Lethal Protector but also the lesser-known story arc Planet of the Symbiotes. Published in 1995, the original plot sees Eddie Brock team up with former enemy Spider-Man and Peter Parker’s clone Scarlet Spider to find the true killer of a spate of symbiote-related murders that have framed Venom. It’s revealed that the five other symbiotes from Lethal Protector are responsible and the story’s big climax involves the symbiotes building a teleport to their home world, to bring about a symbiote invasion of Earth.

It’s easy to see why Sony would be interested in adapting Planet of the Symbiotes. As we know, Venom is the first in the studio’s intriguing Spider-Man-less universe, which will be built around villains and anti-heroes like Silver Sable, Black Cat and Kraven. So, with Venom disconnected from Spidey’s mythos, it needs to create a mythology of its own – something that exploring various symbiotes, and even their home planet, would definitely do.

However, it’s difficult to say right now how much of the comics storyline will remain in the film. It’s possible that the overt sci-fi element will be jettisoned and the grittier “Venom is framed” angle will be played up. Given that Carnage is thought to be the movie’s main villain, we wouldn’t be surprised if Cletus Kassidy is the ringleader of the other symbiotes and is the mastermind behind this ploy to stitch up Eddie Brock.

Surely whichever way they merge these two storylines, though, Venom will end up a very busy film indeed. Let’s just hope it avoids the pitfalls of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which tried to kickstart a franchise instead of simply being a good movie.

Venom is due to slither into cinemas on October 5th, 2018.

CCXP Teaser Poster For Venom Officially Unleashed

“We are Venom.”

That’s the official tagline attached to the CCXP (Comic-Con Experience) teaser poster for Venom, Sony and Ruben Fleischer’s starry spinoff pic that is about to uncover a whole new breed of anti-hero in 2018.

Initially spotted at Brazil’s annual expo early last week, the banner image features a classic rendition of the alien symbiote that first slithered onto the pages of Randy Schueller’s comic in ’88. Now, almost 30 years later, Fleischer and Mad Max star Tom Hardy are about to deliver a hardboiled version of the iconic anti-hero, and we understand filming is already underway across parts of Atlanta and New York.

As a matter of fact, both Hardy and Fleischer have been dropping story clues all this week, after the latter revealed another comic inspiration for Venom‘s narrative arc: Planet of the Symbiotes. First published in ’95, its story will seemingly be fused with that of Lethal Protector, which has also been name-dropped as a catalyst for the big-screen adaptation, one written by Scott Rosenberg, Jeff Pinkner and Kelly Marcel.

And though Planet of the Symbiotes and Lethal Protector will have a huge bearing on Venom overall, there have also been murmurings that Fleischer and his team have looked to the likes of David Cronenberg and John Carpenter, two giants of cinema, for inspiration when it comes to the film’s body-horror elements. Stay tuned for more on that front.

Angled to be ground zero of Sony’s Spider-Man universe, one that exists as an adjunct to the massively popular MCU, Venom is due to get the ball rolling on October 5th, 2018. Riz Ahmed, Jenny Slate and Manchester By the Sea actress Michelle Williams also star, with the latter seemingly poised to take point as Anne Weying (She-Venom?). Looking further afield, Sony is said to be plotting a separate spinoff based on cult favorite Morbius, the Living Vampire, as well.

New Venom Set Photos See Tom Hardy In Action

Since Sony’s Venom began production back in October, a steady stream of pics from the set have leaked out. The latest bunch arrived online today and though not terribly revealing, they showcase Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock shooting what looks to be a motorcycle action sequence.

If you’re disappointed that the actor isn’t in the classic black suit in these shots, then you should know that the big reveal of what the movie’s version of the symbiote supervillain looks like won’t occur for a while yet. After all, it’s been confirmed that Venom will be an entirely CGI creation, so don’t expect to see the creature until, say, the first teaser trailer drops sometime next year.

However, we can still gather something about the approach to the film from these photos. As said above, it looks like this is an action-based scene. But from Hardy’s casual wear, rather than the motion capture suit used for CGI characters, it’s clear that this sequence only features Eddie Brock and not his alter-ego. This suggests that a lot of the movie will be driven by Brock’s character, perhaps with Venom only being used sparingly.

Not that fans should expect there to be a lack of symbiote goodness in the film, mind you. Both Hardy and director Ruben Fleischer have recently confirmed comic book influences on Venom that heavily hint that Brock won’t be the only symbiote host around. We’ve been told that the Lethal Protector and Planet of the Symbiotes storylines are major inspirations. These arcs include not only Venom’s nemesis Carnage, but also five other symbiotes: Scream, Phage, Riot, Lasher and Agony. Plus, Michelle Williams is thought to be playing She-Venom, too.

Though filming is taking place in Atlanta, Venom will be set in San Francisco, where New Yorker Eddie has travelled to in order to sort out his inner demons. In contrast to the MCU’s Spider-Man movies, it will be R-rated and you can catch the symbiote when Sony’s spinoff swings into cinemas on October 5th, 2018.

Woody Harrelson In Talks To Join Tom Hardy In Venom

Variety brings word today that Woody Harrelson, who we recently saw in War for the Planet of the Apes, is negotiating for a role in Sony’s Venom spinoff.

Should a deal place, he’ll star opposite Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed, who is attached to play a “major Marvel character” (Carnage, perhaps?) in the 2018 actioner. Ruben Fleischer of Zombieland fame will be calling the shots from behind the lens, and though Sony declined to comment, it’s being reported that Harrelson will portray “a henchmen of sorts.”

Story-wise, the Eddie Brock solo movie has a script from Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, who recently dabbled with rip-roaring adventure thanks to their contribution to the Dwayne Johnson-led yarn, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Not only that, but over the past few days, both Hardy and Fleischer have been dropping story clues, after the latter revealed another comic inspiration for Venom‘s narrative arc: Planet of the Symbiotes. First published in ’95, its story will seemingly be fused with that of Lethal Protector, which has also been name-dropped as a catalyst for the big-screen adaptation.

And while those two arcs will have a huge bearing on Venom overall, there have also been murmurings that Fleischer and his team have looked to the likes of David Cronenberg and John Carpenter, two giants of cinema, for inspiration when it comes to the film’s body-horror elements. Stay tuned for more on that front.

Venom will claw its way into theaters on October 5th, 2018. Looking further afield, Sony is said to be plotting a separate spinoff based on cult favorite Morbius, the Living Vampire, as well.
